Ahhh that’s probably why. We were on the 5th floor so we got the craziest action as most of this stuff that was going on was on the 3rd-6th floors.

How early did you go to bed?? We heard/saw this stuff at like 8-9pm. Though I guess if you were in the bedroom you probably couldn’t hear it as well as we did. That’s the price we pay for eating pizza in the living room ( ´_ゝ`)ﾉ

An open letter to anime convention attendees

I really thought I’d never make a public post like this. I thought I would be able to keep it on the forums and not let it spill over to here. But the responses I’m now receiving are appalling. I need to say something.

Let me just start off by saying that I’ve been going to acen for 7 years, this year being my 8th. I’ve been staying in nearby hotels for 4. The whole time, we’ve had a few instances of people running through the hallways. People shouting. People all around being an ass. But those were few and far between. I could count the number of times I’ve been disturbed by the noise level on my fingers. Usually the hotels have been a safe area and I’ve felt completely fine entering the hallways at night.

However this year was completely different. This year was wrong.

I started my stay on Thursday. It was a great start of a great weekend. There were a lot of people and generally everyone was nice! I stayed at the Embassy this year, same as last year. It’s a hotel that’s across the street from the con. It’s considered one of the main 4 hotels [Embassy, Double Tree, Hilton and Hyatt]. The Hyatt is usually deemed the party hotel as that is where most of the programming for Acen takes place. Embassy and Double Tree are usually more for people who want the convenience of being near the con, yet want to avoid the craziness of the party night time crowd. When you got your room key this year, there was a paper stating specifically that the hotel wished for acen attendees to keep noise level to a minimum and to act respectfully for those that were not attending the con.

It seems most people ignored that.

From 7pm to the wee hours of the morning, people were going batshit insane. I’m not just talking going in and out of rooms at 3am. I’m talking insane. They were screaming, shouting, yelling, fighting, throwing shit all over and being a complete mess. I have never seen the Embassy in this state. I’ve never felt the need to run out and call the cops or the hotel staff to tell these people to stop. It wasn’t just a room party thing either. These people were conducting themselves like magnificent assholes right in the hallway.
Friday night was even worse. People would be sitting from the balcony of the 5th floor to shout down to the people sitting on the 4th floor. People would be screaming, LITERALLY SCREAMING at the top of their lungs and running down the hallway. You could tell that everyone was drunk. It wasn’t even that late either. It was like 9pm. When my friend went out to go yell at people, she found some guy sitting outside his room asking people who threw a box of food at his door. It was a mess. Such a mess that there ended up being police officers on each level of the hotel. Such a mess that my friends who were staying in a different hotel were nervous to go back to their own at night.

The worst moment of all this, however, was going down to the lobby to find the pizza delivery guy and nearly stepping into vomit and hearing some dude yelling that his friend needed to get to his room because he was so drunk. As I moved away, I noticed a young girl with her mother waiting for the elevator. They both looked absolutely bewildered and the mother had the most horrified expression on her face.

I need to ask. Acen, anime convention attendees… What is going on? When I posted about this in the acen gripes thread, I was given this type of response. “On the issue of noise at the hotels, I’d recommend staying somewhere further away, not in the main 3/4 hotels. You won’t deal with the noise there, and if it bothers you so much, the driving and parking costs will be worth it. Otherwise, not much can be done in terms of noise.”

“As for noise, any of the core hotels, particularly those that are remote sites for panels, are in danger of being noisy regardless of hotel rules. Nature of the beast. You can complain, but as **** alluded to, you may be better off distancing yourself from the main area of activity.”

That’s it guys. That’s the solution. Acen attendees can continue to act like monkeys, tear up the hotel and cause havoc for people and the best solution is to move away. It’s to ignore it. It’s to allow these people to keep ruining convention experiences for everyone who isn’t there to party like frat boys.

When have we become so jaded to the party crowd? When has it become ok for people to act like this? Is that really how we want ourselves represented? As the party convention the hotel has to watch out for.

Let me also mention, that there was a wedding booked at the Embassy. There was also an influx of families with children staying at the hotel and going to the con. Is it really fair and right to tell them that if they wish to avoid the debauchery, they should simply turn to a different hotel? How come the people who cause such trouble don’t get kicked out? They don’t get their badge pulled and they don’t face any consequences. No. They get stroked and are enabled to continue what they do. Because that’s how acen is. That’s how acen has become.

I’m also curious if other conventions have to deal with this same type of night time crowd. I’ve watched vlogs and people seem to have no trouble at night. Kollisioncon never had this problem. Yet at acen, you can’t step out of your room without dealing with people screaming, shouting and acting like 2 year olds.
